2013 March
In March 2013 I enjoyed two dives in this flooded cave system with local dive guide Salvador Luna. The entire cave system, which is south of Playa del Carmen, extends to over 61 kilometres although I only saw a minuscule portion. It is one of the world longest underwater cave systems and includes, at 118 metres, the deepest known cave passage.

I had never seen such clear water. Indeed, it hardly felt as though I was diving in water, the visibility was that clear. I wrote “visibility 60 metres” in my log book but the truth is I had no idea; it could just as easily have been 100 metres.

In our first dive Salvador and I explored the cave system as far as the Barbie Line, the second to the Bat Cave where we surfaced and watched bats fly around above our heads.
