In December I drove up to South West Rocks for two dives at Fish Rock with South West Rocks Dive Centre. I had heard that Grey Nurse sharks were presently in the shallow cave entrance and I was keen to take the now classic shot of them coming into the cave with blue water visible behind them.
I planned to fin straight to the shallow cave and sit inside the entrance for 45 minutes photographing them but there was a ripping current and I was forced to turn back. It was now too late to take the longer route via the deep entrance and through the 125 metre long cave system that links it to the shallow cave entrance. Instead I photographed Grey Nurse sharks in Shark Gutter.
During the Surface Interval, a Great White swam beneath Viper, our dive boat. Pete, one of the South West Rocks Dive Centre owners, rang his insurance company to discuss this. They advised that all divers should be given the option of a refund. With one exception everyone declined the offer and at our own risk we began the second dive.
I swam through the cave system to the shallow cave entrance but frustratingly there was no sign of any Grey Nurse sharks there. Oh well, the classic shot will have to wait to another time.
