In November 2009 Nicci “Scubasquirrel” Johnson organised a weekend trip to Montegue Island for a group of nine divers, including me. After a 5 hour drive south from Sydney, local boat Dallas ferried us out on the 20-25 minute trip from Narooma.
Montegue Island lies about 10 kilometres offshore of Narooma. It is a nature reserve with penguins nesting on the island in the spring and is home to numerous seabirds and hundreds of fur seals.
The seals did not fail to live up to their reputation as being quite probably the most fun sea life to dive with. Interacting with us, sneaking up behind us and generally being in a mischievous and fun mood!
A large Stingray cruised by me on one of our four dives but I was oblivious to it as I continued to photograph the seals. We also saw Port Jacksons, a Wobbegong Shark, a Fiddler Ray and motoring back to Narooma, a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins.
A fabulous trip – thank you Nicci.
