The Nambucca Heads dive site is located on north side of the Nambucca River estuary, on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. In November 2014 I dived there twice with resident diver, Bob Lewis. Bob told me that in the five years he had been diving Nambucca Heads he had seen over 50 species of fish.
Our first dive was at the Inner Basin. In underwater visibility of around 5 metres, Bob spotted a large Lionfish and an Octopus. We got a glimpse of a Grouper and also saw several skittish Flatheads.
Our second dive was at the V-Wall Gap. This can be dived in two sections. The first is a long breakwater which extends from a small sandy beach out to sea, the other starts at the same sandy beach and ultimately leads you to the Inner Basin. We chose the latter section. We had a very easy beach entry, wading into the shallow water from the beach and then followed the rock wall keeping it to our right hand side. Bull sharks have been seen here but if there were any nearby, we did not see them. The underwater visibility was about 8 to 10 metres. This dive site should be dived in clear water as with Bull sharks around, its best avoided when murky. Eventually we came to a gap in the breakwater and finned into the Inner Basin.
