Wolf Rock is one of Australia’s must-do dives and in June 2019 Lesley Rudd and I travelled there to check it out. It consists of four volcanic pinnacles covered by hard and soft corals, regularly swept by strong currents. The dive site is located inside the Great Sandy Marine Park, just off Double Island Point near the beachside town of Rainbow Beach.
Grey nurse sharks are found here all year round and it is the only known Grey Nurse shark gestation aggregation zone on the East Coast of Australia – the pregnant Mums seemed huge to me, certainly they were the biggest Grey Nurse sharks I had ever seen. The humpback whale migration was in full swing and as well I saw Cownose rays, the occasional turtle, a Manta ray, Leopard shark, Wobbegong shark and two Whitespotted Shovelnose Guitarfish. I also got a glimpse of a Bowmouth Guitarfish but couldn’t get close enough to it for a photograph.
Lesley and I dived with the very friendly Wolf Rock Dive Centre. Owned by Alex Heathcote, James Nelson and his partner Fiona Butler I can thoroughly recommend them to anyone wishing to dive this fabulous location.
