June 2004
In June 2004, Eve and I spent a week at Lahami Bay Beach Resort, 120 kilometres south of Marsa Alam and the most southerly hotel on the Egyptian Red Sea. Indeed the only other accommodation between Lahami Bay and the Egyptian/Sudanese border is backpackers accommodation in Berenice. Lahami Bay Beach Resort is a superb 4-star resort with 110 rooms whose guests are almost exclusively German, Swiss, Dutch or Italian. The Resort does not feature in any British travel brochures. However through the Internet, I was able to contact Ursula Wolf, the Resort's Guest Accommodation Manager, who, flights excepted, organised this holiday for us. The Resort has a sandy beach that stretches over 8 kilometres and a 5 kilometre house reef which is easily accessible from the beach. Tanks and weights are left there during daylight hours for Independent Divers to use whenever they like. I was fortunate enough to meet Stefan Brunisholz who became my regular dive buddy when i was not diving with Eve.

There are plenty of diving options at the resort with Day boats offering trips to 40 different dive sites including Coral Garden, Fury Shoal, Shab Wadi Lahami, Shab Mahsur and Shab Sataia. The visibility on some of our Day boat dives was amazing, the underwater scenery stunning. Fish highlights were Sea Horses, Napoleon Wrasse, Bluespotted Rays, Snappers, Titan Triggerfish, Giant Moray Eels, Jacks, a Whitetip Reef Shark and an Eagle Ray. Until this holiday I had considered the Subex Dive Centre, El Quseir to be the best Dive Centre that I know. No longer. That compliment now belongs to the Ocean-Pro Dive Centre at Lahami Bay Beach Resort which is quite exceptional. All the Dive Centre staff were very efficient and friendly - particularly helpful to me were Fabienne Zielinsky and her boyfriend Andreas. I consider this to be one of the best diving holiday locations in the Egyptian Red Sea.
